YourSpace: "Teens split on best ice cream"

8/27/2009

(by Marina Koren - August 27, 2009)
The average American consumes 25 pounds – or 80 cones – of ice cream per year, or so says a study by the University of Wisconsin’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.
It’s no surprise then that business at Gelotti’s of West Caldwell hasn’t slowed and the lines at the Towne Scoop of Verona have grown longer since its recent opening.
But just like everyone has a preference when it comes to Coke and Pepsi or Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks, Verona teens have chosen between Gelotti’s and the Towne Scoop for their frozen dessert needs.
Some prefer Gelotti’s wide selection of flavors and extensive toppings, while others appreciate the Towne Scoop’s old-fashioned atmosphere, low prices and employees clad in white polo shirts with maroon bow ties.
But even though kids in town seem to be split between the two, both ice cream parlors have successfully acquired many loyal customers.
Emily Ramon, who graduated from VHS in 2008, has had the chance to get a taste of both Gelotti’s and Towne Scoop as an employee. Ramon worked at Gelotti’s last spring and summer and has been scooping ice cream at the Towne Scoop since this July.
“Both have really great ice cream,” Ramon said. “Gelotti’s has more flavors but Towne Scoop is more convenient because there are fewer lines and less chaos.”
Ramon said that scooping and selling ice cream has not made her resent the dessert and she and her friends have gone out for ice cream to both ice cream parlors this summer.
“I have stayed neutral about ice cream, though the smell of other ice cream places can be memory-inducing,” she said. “I’ve also achieved an overdeveloped right forearm from scooping.”
Senior Jenna Barone said she goes to the Towne Scoop when she has a craving for good quality ice cream.
“The Towne Scoop is around where I hang out and it’s not very expensive,” Barone said. “And of course, the ice cream is always delicious.”
Andrew Glick, a 2008 graduate of VHS, said he is a bigger fan of the Towne Scoop as well.
“It’s close to home, convenient and I know people who work there,” Glick said. “Being a college student, I don’t get a lot of chances to be home so it’s worthwhile to go somewhere so close when I can.”
Dana Petermann, who graduated from VHS this past June, said she has always been a fan of Gelotti’s ice cream.
“I think it has the best ice cream around and my friends work there too,” Petermann said. “It’s bigger compared to other places and has a lot more choices.”
Zach Symons, a 2008 VHS graduate, has been scooping ice cream, blending milkshakes, and serving customers at the Towne Scoop since June. He said the ice cream parlor has great ice cream.
“When my friends and I go out for ice cream, we come here,” Symons said. “I know the people here and I get a 15 percent discount, so that’s a plus.”
Symons said he believes that ice cream parlor has grown tremendously in popularity this summer.
“It’s been really busy in the store since I’ve been here,” he said. “People just keep coming.”
Sophomore Billy Meade said that he hits the Towne Scoop when he and his friends are in the mood for ice cream on a hot summer night.
“I like it because it’s got really good ice cream and great service,” Meade said.
Verona alumna Jenna Tamburello, on the other hand, said she believes the selection of ice cream and gelato at Gelotti’s is unbeatable.
“The variety of flavors is fantastic and I love the banana Oreo flavor,” she said. “Gelotti’s definitely has the best toppings around.”
Tamburello said that while she is a Gelotti’s girl through and through, she admits that she likes the Towne Scoop because of its cozy, small town atmosphere.
“It’s a really pleasant setting,” she said. “And I won’t lie, the confetti cake batter ice cream is scrumptious!”
